The IFS Committee is deeply saddened to let our members know that shortly before the launch of the 2025 season, our colleague and friend Hazel Flynn died suddenly and unexpectedly.
Hazel joined the IFS committee in early 2024 and took over the challenging role of curator. Our wonderful 2025 film season is the outcome of Hazel’s dedication and passion for the power of screen storytelling, which is in some ways an extension of another passion of hers, writing.
Hazel strove to make the opening night as special and memorable as it could be. It is due to Hazel’s vision and determination that the evening included an in-person Q&A with world-renowned film director Gillian Armstrong AM and a personal response from actor Cate Blanchett.
For those of us who had the pleasure to know and work with her, Hazel is sorely missed. We are devastated for Hazel’s family and large circle of friends.
To quote Gillian Armstrong, “We need the Hazels of this world to make us all experience and delight in the incredible journey of the best in film.”
We hope you enjoy this year’s season of films and remember it as Hazel’s lasting gift to our Society.
