On a WA wheat farm in 1968, Ed (Xavier Samuel) and Paddy (Clarence Ryan) are best mates despite steep social inequalities. But new laws requiring white farmers like Ed’s dad to start paying wages to Aboriginal workers like Paddy’s family change their world, and the boys’ feelings for a new neighbour (Mia Wasikowska, in one of her first roles) push them further apart. Roger Mason’s dreamlike score complements visuals that pay homage to Terrence Malick.
