17 March: Young Plato

This week’s film is the documentary Young Plato, directed by Neasa Ní Chianáin & Declan McGrath.

A primary school headmaster in Belfast’s rough Ardoyne housing estates invokes the wisdom of the ancient Greek philosophers to fight poverty, drug dealers and the IRA – restoring hope in the heart of a battered community.

Kevin McArevey, the charismatic principal of Holy Cross Boys’ Primary School, is the star of the film. His boundless energy, wisdom and obsession with Elvis Presley makes for an engaging and inspiring documentary as he interacts with the students both one on one and at large.

“In these polarized times, these are lessons that we could all stand to learn.” –Michael O’Sullivan, Washington Post

“This is an open and good-natured film, with some great setpiece scenes with poignant closeups on kids’ faces as they ponder why they are so angry and what can be done about it” –Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian ★★★★

Make sure not to miss this touching documentary when Young Plato screens this Sunday, 17 March from 7pm at the Gala Cinema.
