7 April: The Woman King

This week’s film is the historical action-adventure The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Based on the remarkable story of the Agojie, The Woman King tells the story of the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. It follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (played by Viola Davis; The Help, How to Get Away with Murder) as she inspires the King to take on the enemies determined to violate their honour and destroy their way of life.

“A hell of a time at the movies, a seemingly 'niche' topic with great appeal, the sort of battle-heavy feature that will likely engender plenty of hoots and hollers” (IndieWire)

The Woman King works, it's majestic... The magnitude and the awe this movie inspires are what epics like Gladiator and Braveheart are all about” (RogerEbert.com)
