September 10: Flee

This week’s film is Flee, directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen.

Flee tells a poignant story of belonging and the search for identity. Amin Nawabi’s life has been defined by his past and a secret he’s kept for over 20 years. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan as a young child with his mother and siblings, Amin now grapples with how his past will affect his future in Denmark and the life he is building with his soon-to-be husband.

Told through the use of animation to protect his identity, Amin looks back over his life, opening up for the first time about his past, his trauma, the truth about his family, and his acceptance of his own sexuality.

This unique animated documentary combines four types of storytelling with different visual techniques:

  1. Narrative sections when Amin is being interviewed by director Jonas Rasmussen, recorded over the span of four years in different locations

  2. Amin’s memories of his childhood,

  3. Real archival footage from the period, and

  4. Nightmares – a polar opposite to the lively youth scenes

Flee was frequently ranked one of the best films of 2021 and received several five-star reviews from publications The Guardian, Washington Post and The Telegraph. The film also garnered three nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Feature Film, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film.

Flee will screen at the Gala to all IFS members on Sunday, 10 September at 7pm. Don’t miss one of the most highest rated and awarded films of this year’s selection!
